In honor of Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee festivities happening this week, we are taking a short moment to celebrate, you guessed it…the Corgi.

The Queen has been synonymous with the cute pointy eared dog breed since being given a female Corgi named Susan for her 18th birthday in 1944. Her father had first introduced the breed to the family in 1933 when he obtained a Corgi named Dookie for the family.

For many years the Queen has owned descendants of that original Corgi, Susan, that were bred specifically for the Queen. There were also several Dorgis, a Daschund & Corgi mix, owned by and given to members of the royal family.

So beloved are the Queen’s Corgis, a gianormous cake was created in their likeness as part of the Royal Wedding ceremonies for William & Kate. At nearly 6 feet long and 4 feet high, the cake weighed in at a whopping 150 pounds. The cake set a new Guinness World Record for the largest dog-friendly cake. Yes, you heard it, the cake was later eaten by the dogs. The ingredients included 120 eggs, dry dog food, flour, garlic cloves and fish oil, and took nearly 111 hours over a period of 3 weeks to put together by award winning baker Michelle Wibowo.

Congrats to the Corgi-loving Queen on her Diamond Jubilee, and may we see more of her precious pet companions in the near future.
